Midwinter Break, by Bernard MacLaverty, is a story of quiet disappointment in the life and marriage of long-married Gerry Gilmore, a retired architect, and his wife Stella, as they head off on a mini-break. Both are at odds with their lot and with each other. He is retreating into drink, she into religion. Bernard MacLaverty was born in Northern Ireland and has lived in Glasgow since 1975. He has written a number of novels, starting with Cal and Lamb, titles which many will recognise as school set texts. Midwinter Break has met with popular and critical acclaim. The Spectator wrote: 'This is an achingly sad book, and essential in its sadness. It is illuminated with skill and application and labour and something very like love.' This event is not to be missed!
